Etegami

Etegami is a postcard with a drawing or painting and a short message.

Etegami typically shows season related drawings such as fruits, flowers, hina dolls (hinamatsuri) ogers (setsubun) etc.

You can send your etegami any time of the year. The busiest time is at New Year when everyone sends New Year postcards which are called ‘Nengajo’. There are many kinds of Nengajo, home-made or store bought, all from different prices. Usually, Nengajo features the next year’s animal in accordance with the Chinese horoscope. So, for example, 2008 is the year of the rat, which means that many Nengajos will depict this animal.

As you probably guessed, the previous postcards were hand-made and I can tell you it is a lot more fun than buying them at the store. You can create your own designs, depending on your skills and the person you are sending them to. It is also a good way to relax and ease your mind, as my etegami teacher would say. So, why don’t you give it a try?
